“IPL has already started?” this question popped up in their minds.

But after a closer inspection, they realised that the team batting is not the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. They were Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. And the name of the tournament is not IPL but ILT20– International League Twenty20.

However, those fans can be forgiven for their mistake as Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and its Calcuttan namesake are under the same ownership.

In fact, three out of the six teams of ILT20 are owned by IPL franchises. Other than Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, there are Dubai Capitals which is owned by Delhi Capitals and there is ‘Mumbai Indians Emirates’ a subsidiary of the Ambani Group owned IPL team Mumbai Indians.

So, IPL’s imprint in ILT20 is very hard to miss.

Hard-hitting opener batter Dewald Brevis can expect a David Warner-like transition to international cricket as South Africa look to deepen their player pool under a new coaching structure.

Former under-19 coach Shukri Conrad, who was in charge of the age-group team at the 2022 World Cup, where Brevis was the top-scorer, and former Central Stags coach Rob Walter, were announced as South Africa’s new red and white-ball coaches respectively and both are keen to fast-track young talent with Brevis top of mind.

He has become the most-talked-about batter in South Africa, more so when he struck 162 runs off 57 balls in a domestic T20 match in October, a week before the national men’s side failed to chase 159 in a must-win T20 World Cup match against Netherlands and calls for his immediate promotion grew.

Enoch Nkwe, South Africa’s Director Cricket, has heard them and has a plan to get Brevis into the senior set-up soon.

“There’s a lot of noise around Brevis. We know how good he is. He has shown it in SA20,

he has played some good cricket and he has been pretty consistent in T20 cricket,” Nkwe said. “In terms of youngsters, the reality moving forward, we might have to do a David-Warner type of approach where there is going to be the transition phase from under-19 cricket into professional cricket through T20 and then ODI and then Test cricket. That’s something we foresee happening in the future.”

Warner, who played his 100th Test against South Africa at the MCG, had just 20 domestic white-ball caps to his name before making his international debut in a T20I against South Africa and played in only 11 first-class matches before his Test debut.

Brevis already has more experience than that in shorter formats. He has played in 37 T20s including at the IPL, CPL and SA20, and six List A matches but has yet to play a first-class match. As part of a strong Titans’ squad, who are third in the four-day domestic competition, and boasts names like Test captain Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Theunis de Bruyn, and Heinrich Klaasen, it has been difficult for Brevis to get a look-in but playing him in longer formats is top of Nkwe’s mind.

“We understand someone like Brevis has a lot of cricket to play and now we have to see how we get him to that longer format? We know that he can offer a lot to South African cricket,” Nkwe said.

Asked specifically whether Conrad and Walter have been involved in discussions about Brevis, Nkwe would not be drawn into anything more than reiterating their commitment to development. “Both coaches are big believers in looking after the younger generation but also not just throwing them in the deep end,” he said. “It’s about having a very clear detailed plan of every individual who has been identified and how they are going to form part of the Proteas set-up.”

Ultimately, the decision of whether Brevis plays for South Africa will not lie with Conrad and Walter alone. Selection convener Victor Mpitsang and Patrick Moroney are the other two people involved in picking players and, though the coaching set-up has changed, both are contracted until the end of the year. They will be in charge of naming the group of players who will take on England in three World Cup Super League ODIs later this month. Given Brevis’ form – he struck an unbeaten 70 off 41 balls in the SA20 opener and 42 off 34 balls in the third game – he could be a wildcard pick for what are crucial matches for South Africa. They need to win at least one of the ODIs to remain in contention for automatic qualification for this year’s 50-over World Cup and with Nkwe saying the T20 and ODI formats are “close to each other,” it may be time for Brevis to graduate to the big time.

The squad is expected to be announced later this week but Walter will not be in charge of it just yet. The new coaches begin work next month and an interim appointment will be made for the England series.

Australian batting stalwart David Warner has indicated he wants the 2024 T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies to be his international swansong, saying winning the title would be an icing on the cake.

“(This will) most likely be my last year of my international career. I’ve got my sights set on the 2024 (T20) World Cup as well, so finishing in the Americas (North America and Caribbean islands), that’d be nice to top it off with a win over there, pending selection,” Warner was quoted as saying by Sky Sports on Thursday.

Warner was adjudged the ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his tally of 289 runs in Australia’s winning campaign in the T20 World Cup in the UAE in 2021. He is currently playing BBL for Sydney Thunders.

“I’ve signed (with the Thunder) for this year and next year, and it’s my time to contribute and give back. I’ve got that time to do that now … (this will) most likely be my last year of my international career,” added Warner.

In December last year, Warner had said that he was highly motivated for the four-Test Border-Gavaskar series in India if he is included in the touring party.

“The extra motivation for me is winning in India and completely winning a series in England. I’ve been told by the coach and the selectors they would like me to be there.

“Was there doubt? Of course there was doubt in my mind but for me it was about going out there and knowing that I’ve still got that hunger and determination because every time I rock up to training, I’ve got it,” he had said.

Meanwhile, Steve Smith has said he will keep concentrating on his ODI and Test careers and had not given much thought to his T20 international future. The former Test captain had played just one match during Australia’s home World Cup campaign last year.

“There’s not a great deal of T20 internationals, so for me, Test and one-day cricket are the huge priorities with what’s coming up and then we’ll wait and see,” Smith told reporters on Thursday.

Nepal court releases rape accused cricketer Lamichhane on bail

Nepal’s top court on Thursday released cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane on bail after he was accused of raping a minor in the Himalayan nation, officials said.

On September 8, a court in Nepal issued an arrest warrant for the national cricket team captain Lamichhane after a 17-year-old girl alleged that he raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu, police had said.

The Patan High Court ordered release of Lamichhane with the bail of Rs 2 million, according to the court sources.

In October, Lamichhane was taken into custody.

A joint bench of judges Dhruvaraj Nanda and Ramesh Dhakal decided to release the former IPL star on bail of Rs 2 million, reversing the decision of the Kathmandu district court.

A minor, had registered a complaint against Lamichhane on September 5 at the police saying that she was raped by the cricket star and Lamichhane was subsequently sent to custody for investigation as per the district court verdict.

In October, Lamichhane wrote on Facebook that he would “fully cooperate in all stages of the investigation and will fight a legal battle to prove my innocence”, before being arrested.

However, Lamichhane has been barred to leave the country until the final verdict of the court in the case.

Lamichhane is Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer, and the first cricketer from Nepal to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), when he made his debut for the Delhi Capitals franchise in 2018.

A wily leg-spinner, armed with a vicious googly, he was a much sought-after cricketer in other big-ticket T20 leagues around the world, including the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the CPL.

The prodigiously gifted cricketer holds the record for the world’s second-fastest bowler to capture 50 ODI wickets and the third-fastest to race to 50 T20I wickets.

Lamichhane’s last international appearance came in August this year, when he played against Kenya in a T20I encounter.

Former England batsman Ballance makes winning debut for Zimbabwe

Former England batsman Gary Ballance contributed 30 runs on his international debut for Zimbabwe as they beat Ireland by five wickets on Thursday to win the opening Twenty20 international of their three-match series.

Ballance’s runs came off 29 balls as Zimbabwe scored 118-5 as they initially made heavy weather of chasing down Ireland’s modest total of 114 all out but in the end won with two overs to spare at the Harare Sports Club.

The 33-year-old left-handed batter last month signed a two-year contract to play domestic and international cricket in the country of his birth following his release from county cricket side Yorkshire.

Ballance played 23 Tests for England between 2014 and 2017, scoring 1,498 runs, including four centuries, at an average of 37.45. He also appeared in 16 one-day internationals but has been allowed to switch his international allegiance.

The Harare-born player has spent the last year on the sidelines while dealing with mental health issues after he admitted to using racist language against former Yorkshire team mate Azeem Rafiq.

Yorkshire, who released Ballance two years early from his contract as per the player’s wishes, have made sweeping changes following Rafiq’s explosive allegations of institutional racism at the club. Ballance has apologised to Rafiq in person.

cpl news – 5 overseas batters who can score a century in IPL 2023

Despite the high-risk nature of T20 cricket, scoring a century isn’t an uncommon phenomenon and one can expect a few in IPL 2023. The tournament is still a good couple of months away at the very least, although the buzz and excitement around it is always palpable.

Over the years, a number of batters have made it a habit to set the stage alight with their flamboyant batting. It’s hard to look past a certain Chris Gayle in that regard. The ‘Universe Boss’ holds the record for the most centuries scored in the league’s history, having struck six of them.

Virat Kohli holds the Indian record with five and will be keen to add a sixth and join his former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) teammate come IPL 2023. With regards to overseas players, though, there are a fair few superstars who could well lay down a marker in the new season.

On that note, let’s assess five overseas batters who could rock up with a century come IPL 2023.

#1 Jos Buttler (Rajasthan Royals)

A pretty obvious choice, isn’t he? Jos Buttler had a ball in IPL 2022, blasting four centuries and powering the Rajasthan Royals (RR) to the final. He finished with the Orange Cap for the most runs in the season, while also walking away with the award for the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Buttler is widely regarded as the best batter in the world at present in the T20 format. Given that he opens the innings, he has a full set of 20 overs to cash in upon and maximize to the fullest. It should definitely not come as a surprise if he scores a century or two in IPL 2023 as well.

#2 Jonny Bairstow (Punjab Kings)

Jonny Bairstow enjoyed a purple patch in 2022, before a freak injury on a golf course ended his calendar year prematurely. The belligerent English opener is on the path to recovery and is expected to turn out for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2023.

Bairstow was shored up to open the innings last year after he was initially used at No. 3. He is as destructive a batter as any against pace bowling and with the field restrictions in place, there are fewer batters who can utilize it as well as the Yorkshireman.

IPL 2023 is set to be played in the traditional home-and-away format and the Kings should play a good chunk of their matches in Mohali. It is as good a batting track as any in India and it’s hard to look past Bairstow scoring a century in the upcoming season.

#3 David Warner

Australian superstar David Warner has been one of the most consistent performers in the IPL. Year after year, the southpaw has churned out the big runs and is as big a match-winner as any doing the rounds.

With Rishabh Pant’s participation in IPL 2023 under a huge cloud, Warner will have a massive role to play for the Delhi Capitals (DC). He could potentially lead the outfit too should Pant not make it to the tournament and his performance with the bat could have a direct correlation with the Capitals’ returns.

Expect Warner to have another fine season with the bat, as is the norm with him. A century off his blade followed by that trademark celebratory leap isn’t beyond the realms of possibility either.

#4 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Kolkata Knight Riders)

One of the biggest moves made by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was trading Rahmanullah Gurbaz from the Gujarat Titans (GT). The Afghan wicketkeeper-batter is expected to slot in at the top of the order and open the innings for the two-time IPL champions.

On what is expected to be a good batting wicket at Eden Gardens, Gurbaz should enjoy going all out in attack in the powerplay. This should set him up for big scores and lay the foundation for KKR to cash in.

It’s one of the most exciting factors to look forward to in IPL 2023 and scoring a century should see him leave a long-lasting imprint on the tournament.

#5 Faf du Plessis (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

For a format as volatile as T20, Faf du Plessis has been an extremely consistent batter as he has shown over the years for South Africa and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was picked up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in last year’s mega auction and appointed their captain as well.

Even in an average season by his standards, he churned out 468 runs at an average of 31.20 and a strike rate of 127.52 last year. Du Plessis will lead RCB again in IPL 2023 and will look to better their Qualifier 2 finish from last season.

He equaled his IPL career-best of 96 in 2022, while also striking a century in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) later that very year.

He has lately looked to attack the bowlers in the powerplay and if he bats 20 overs in a game, expecting a century off his blade in IPL 2023 wouldn’t be a stretch.

After two aborted attempts, South Africa’s third effort to establish a vibrant franchised T20 competition got under way on Tuesday in Cape Town, and it found its own McCullum in the preternaturally talented Dewald Brevis.

Imitation sprang readily to mind in this instance because all six of the South African franchises are owned by IPL teams: Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals own the teams in Cape Town and Paarl respectively, who were pitched against each other for the opening match.

Dewald Brevis, touted as the next big thing in South African cricket, announced himself in the opening match of what CSA hopes will be its next big tournament, the SA20. Brevis smashed 70 off 41 balls and shared in a 90-run opening stand with Ryan Rickelton to take MI Cape Town to an easy eight-wicket win over Paarl Royals in the competition’s first match.

Set 143 to win, MI Cape Town were untroubled in the chase and reached the target inside 16 overs to secure a bonus point. Paarl Royals were without their bowling spearhead Lungi Ngidi, who has just returned from South Africa’s Test tour to Australia, and will play the season without the injured Obed McCoy. They may already be wondering where they will get their firepower from.

The same question could be asked of their batting. They were less-than-fluent on a surface that seemed not to allow much free-flowing strokeplay until Brevis and Rickelton got together. Royals stumbled to 56 for 3 in the 10th over before Jos Buttler and David Miller put on 48 for the fourth-wicket. By then, Jofra Archer had already enjoyed a successful comeback with a wicket maiden in his first over in competitive cricket since July 2021. Archer had Wiaan Lubbe caught at mid-on and went on to take two wickets in two balls when he dismissed Miller and Ferisco Adams. He was well supported by Olly Stone, who took out the middle stumps of both Dane Vilas and Buttler to keep Paarl from ever really getting going.

They may have thought themselves 20 runs short at the break but the way MI went about their innings made them look at least 40 runs adrift. Brevis was severe on anything full, struck the ball cleanly and hit five sixes and four fours in his innings, to finish with a strike rate of 170.73. MI Cape Town knocked off the total with 27 balls to spare.
