In the illustrious realm of Australian sports, Ellyse Perry’s stands as a beacon of excellence, seamlessly navigating between cricket and soccer. Her debut at the age of 16 in both the national cricket and soccer teams marked the genesis of an extraordinary career. Perry’s unique distinction as the youngest Australian to play international cricket and the pioneer to grace both ICC and FIFA World Cups showcased her prodigious talent from the outset. While her initial years witnessed a dual-sport commitment, Perry’s evolution into a single-sport professional athlete since 2014 has solidified her status as one of cricket’s greatest players.

Perry’s Statistical Prowess

Beyond her athletic versatility, Perry’s cricketing prowess is encapsulated by her mastery in both batting and fast bowling. The statistical marvels she has achieved are a testament to her unrivaled skills. Perry’s records include the highest score by an Australian woman in Test matches (213 not out), the groundbreaking feat of amassing 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in T20Is, and the distinction of being the third player to secure 150 wickets in women’s ODIs. Her multifaceted contributions have been instrumental in propelling Australia to eight world championships, eleven WNCL championships, and two WBBL championships.

Perry’s Individual Brilliance

While Australia faced setbacks in the 2016 World Twenty20 and 2017 Cricket World Cup, Perry’s individual brilliance illuminated the cricketing landscape. Amidst team disappointments, Perry’s form in the ODI format was transcendent, evidenced by a remarkable 23-inning stretch where she scored at least 50 runs in 17 instances, boasting an average of 89.53. The 2017–18 Women’s Ashes showcased her historic innings of 213 not out, a feat unmatched by her teammates. Despite the draw, Perry’s exceptional performance underscored her unwavering commitment to excellence.

Milestones and Triumphs – Perry’s Impactful T20 World Cup Stints

Perry’s impact in T20 cricket reached new heights with Australia’s triumph in the 2018 World Twenty20. Her role in taking crucial wickets in key matches underscored her value to the team. The 2020–21 season witnessed Perry’s resilience as she played a vital role in Australia’s fifth T20 World Cup title, despite suffering a torn hamstring. Beyond her on-field contributions, Perry’s mentorship during the remainder of the tournament showcased her leadership and commitment to the team’s success.

Awards, Recognitions, and Continued Excellence

Perry’s stellar performances consistently garnered accolades. In 2020, she was named in the Wisden Cricketers of the Year for her outstanding contributions in 2019. Her recognition extended to the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award for ICC Female Cricketer of the Decade, as well as the awards for women’s ODI and T20I cricketer of the decade. The subsequent years saw Perry’s return to international cricket, marked by notable milestones, including becoming the first woman to score 5,000 runs and take 300 wickets in international cricket.

Afghanistan recalls Nabi for upcoming T20Is

During the forthcoming three-match T20I series against Pakistan, seasoned all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has been brought back to Afghanistan’s T20I team. With Afghanistan’s elimination from the T20 World Cup in 2022, Nabi resigned as captain. He was left off the team for the match against UAE last month. Rahmat Shah and Hazratullah Zazai were dropped from the team, while Nijat Masood and Zahir Khan were moved to the reserves, among other alterations from the lineup that faced UAE in three T20Is last month. Nabi’s last appearance for Afghanistan came in the ODI series against Sri Lanka in November of last year, shortly after he had resigned as the T20I captain following the T20 World Cup.

The 17-person team was revealed by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on March 21. Hard-hitting opener Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmat Shah were conspicuous omissions. Zazai, who now holds the record for Afghanistan’s greatest T20I score, had gone 14 T20I innings without recording a half-century. Rahmat Shah, though, has yet to play in a T20I. Sediqullah Atal, an uncapped opener, has been given his first call-up to the team. The squad will be joined by the reserves Nijat Masoud, Zahir Khan, and Nangyal Karoti. The team that faced UAE included Masoud and Zahir as well.

“”Our squad has been working hard in [the] training camp, and selectors have chosen the best available players for the series,”” stated Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) CEO Naseeb Khan. “” My team will give it their all and will honorably represent our nation, I have trust in that.  We wish our team well in the series and anticipate seeing them win.”” “”A thrilling matchup between two top clubs is something else we anticipate. Both nations have ardent sports supporters who follow their clubs with pride and enthusiasm. We have a particular link since we live next to each other, and we want to show off not just our cricketing prowess but also the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship “”He went further.

Instead of the three ODIs that Afghanistan was supposed to play against Australia during the same time period, the T20I series against Pakistan was put on the schedule. Australia withdrew from that series after the Taliban government, which is currently in power, announced that it would no longer allow girls to attend university. After consulting with the Australian government, Cricket Australia made the choice. According to PCB chairman Najam Sethi, “”cricket and politics should be kept apart,”” but the T20Is against Afghanistan will still go through. Pakistan revealed their starting squad for this series on Monday, resting seasoned players Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Fakhar Zaman. Pakistan will be led by all-around performer Shadab Khan.

March 24 will mark the start of the three-T20I series. Shadab Khan had been selected captain of the series earlier by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Senior athletes Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi have all been given the day off in addition to Babar Azam.

cpl teams – Mukarram Jah – Women’s IPL Dates Announced – Better Late Than Never?

Women’s IPL or WIPL have been announced. About time. How will this affect women’s cricket in India and will we give them a fair chance?

cpl teams

2023 has started off as a bright year for women’s cricket with three major sporting events scheduled back to back- The inaugural Women’s Under-19 World Cup in January, Women’s T20 World Cup in February and the most anticipated… Inaugural Women’s IPL(WIPL) in March through April.

cpl schedule

All you need to know about Women’s IPL (WIPL)

cpl news

On Monday, the auction for the sales of broadcasting rights for the 5-team Women’s IPL took place and they fetched a pretty impressive amount of INR 951 Cr (11 million US dollars approx) over a period of 5 years from 2023-27, roughly INR 7.09 Cr per match. Although it’s far lower than what the IPL is earning (INR 118 Cr per match and INR 50000 Cr for 5 years), it is still very promising considering the fact that IPL also started from INR 8 Cr per match in 2008.

cpl match

Also the rights to own the proposed 5 teams will be sold on 25th of January where the current IPL franchises and their owners are expected to break the banks to have a corresponding women’s team.

cpl scores

The tournament is to be played in March, and will see many Indian and International superstars plying their trade for the respective franchises. A players’ auction would also take place in February where teams can pick the players of their choice within a certain purse limit.

The broadcasting will be done by the newly founded Viacom-18 sports network.

Are we late in launching the Women’s IPL compared to other countries?

The IPL was the pioneer of franchise-based T20 cricket and attracted immediate success way back in the summer of 2008. It has been 15 years since then and many other nations have started their own competitions namely, the BBL in 2010 (Australia), the BPL in 2012 (Bangladesh), the CPL in 2013 (West Indies), the PSL in 2016 (Pakistan), The Hundred in 2021 (England), LPL in 2020 (Sri Lanka) and more recently the ILT20 (UAE) and SA20 (South Africa). But since then other countries, many of them with lesser resources than the BCCI have leapfrogged and launched their Women’s Leagues prior to WIPL.

The WBBL commenced in 2015, the women’s CPL in 2022, Pakistan announced corresponding Women’s PSL before WIPL and in a first, England started the Women’s Hundred simultaneously with the Men’s Hundred in 2021 itself. No surprise that Australia and England are currently top 2 women’s teams in the world.

Why was the Women’s IPL delayed?

For many years, the argument was that India lacks the talent pool for organizing a full-fledged women’s tournament. Also it is worth considering that majority of the Indians didn’t even know that something called an Indian women’s cricket team also existed in this world. Only when Harmanpreet Kaur blasted her way to 175* against a power packed Australian team in the semi- finals of the 2017 Women’s World Cup and India ended as the runners-up in the tournament, did people take notice, and the call for The Women’s IPL started gaining impetus.

But still it is very unlikely that a cricket loving country with a population of almost 1.5 billions lacked the talent pool for WIPL. Rather it was lack of encouragement and our not-so-good domestic structure responsible for the slower growth in women’s cricket.

The need for WIPL and its benefits

The WIPL has the potential to change the whole scenario around the women’s cricket in India in many aspects. It can do a world of good to every single active player and also the aspiring ones; not just in India all over the world.

KL Rahul, The Vice-Captain of Indian Men’s test team said that he took cricket seriously after witnessing Brendon McCullum’s whirlwind innings of 158(73)* for KKR against RCB on 18th April 2008- the first night of IPL.

Will Smeed, a 21-year old emerging cricketer from England says that if given a choice, he will choose playing the IPL over an International World cup because he grew up watching IPL and is highly inspired by the standard of competition. That’s quite a big statement to make.

The IPL has inspired a whole generation of fans and even the current crop of players over the last 15 years. If the WIPL can do that too, the Indian team would become world beaters.

League tournaments help in developing a talent pool and acknowledging valuable performances

The names that have come out of IPL tournaments have been embedded in the minds of people who watched them live in a match. MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma earned captaincy accolades by guiding their teams to multiple IPL titles. Not just the top players who are cricketing geniuses in their own sense, but even the lesser known, low profile players made the world look up and notice their unbelievable performances. They all came to the IPL, proved their worth, did wonders for their team and even went on to represent India at the international level.

These tournaments also provide a player-friendly environment which contributes immensely in the overall development of players in every aspect, be it technically, tactically, physically or mentally. There are world class coaches, physios, trainers, analysts ready to help players anytime. Even if the player is not a part of playing 11, she can develop her game in this culture, enhancing her performance wherever she plays next.

Thus it will help in raising the standard of women’s cricket as a whole. Currently the Australian team is the undisputed leader of women’s cricket, having won the last 3 competitions without any fuss. But courtesy WIPL, others teams will have new players to choose from and excel in world cricket.

Reducing the gulf between men’s and women’s cricket

A few days ago, while scrolling on the ESPNcricinfo app, I came across a headline, “Pandey benefitted from Clark’s advice”. I invariably thought that it was about Manish Pandey and Michael Clarke, but when I opened the article it was about Indian women’s team pacer Shikha Pandey and another great Aussie world cup winning captain Belinda Clark. I was amused at the fact that my mind automatically assumed this was about male cricketers despite the fact that Shikha Pandey and Belinda Clark are equally successful in their careers, if not more. Shikha Pandey had just returned to the Indian squad following a 2 year hiatus benefitting from Clark’s suggestions who has her statue instilled at the famed Sydney Cricket Ground.

Whenever there is a question, ‘Who is the all-time greatest batter in the cricket’s history?’ Some will say Sir Donald Bradman, many votes for Sachin Tendulkar but how many will consider Mithali Raj who in my opinion is as skilled as the above-mentioned gentlemen? Greatest bowler in ODI history? Wasim Akram, or Glenn McGrath maybe….. Meanwhile Jhulan Goswami goes unnoticed. The WIPL will ensure that the women cricketers also become a household name for the Indian audience and get their share of recognition.

Changing the landscape of women’s cricket as a whole

Although WIPL consists of the T20 format, it will still help in evolution and growth of women’s cricket in many ways.

Just for the context, starting from 1934 only 144 Women’s Test matches have been played as compared to 2000 Men’s Tests. 13 players have played more than 144 test matches individually as follows: Shane Warne(145), Mark Boucher(147), Mahela Jayawardene(149), Allan Border(156), Stuart Broad(159), Sir Alastair Cook(161), Rahul Dravid(164), Shivnarine Chanderpaul(164), Jacques Kallis(166), Steve Waugh(168), Ricky Ponting(168), James Anderson(177), Sachin Tendulkar(200).

Ironically, Sir Alastair Cook played 159 continuous Tests between May 2006 and September 2018; and Allan Border played 153 continuous tests between March 1979 and March 1994. That is still 15 and 9  more Test Matches than 8 women’s teams have played over 89 years. It’s ridiculous to say at least.

The T20 leagues can help in attracting audience, which will lead to more women’s tests being scheduled in future.

Financial aspects

Again one of the important things to consider for an athlete.

An athlete has 15-20 years of playing top level sports, where she has to maximise her financial returns and secure a future for herself. Although the BCCI did take a step in the right direction by declaring equal match fees for its Men’s and Women’s teams, the number of matches played by the Women’s team per year are nowhere close to what the Men’s team plays. Also, the major chunk is not constituted by match fees, but the central contracts offered by the BCCI, again having considerably less salaries for the women cricketers, a problem which can be easily solved by WIPL.

The money earned by the sale of media rights and teams of WIPL will hopefully be used in developing the grassroot structures in women’s game and provide sufficient facilities for nurturing the prodigies.

Challenges in the way

The greatest challenge that lies ahead for the WIPL is the public preference and interest. Are we as audience ready to embrace the WIPL as we did the IPL 15 years ago? IPL is played in vacation period in prime time hours, keeping us glued to the television and mobile screens. But the time window for WIPL suggests that it will clash with the marquee international matches of the Men’s Team almost every year.

This year there are India Vs. Australia Men’s matches to be played in March, with England Men’s team scheduled to tour during the same time, next year. So will the Indian audience do justice to Women’s game, for which they have been deprived since long, or will we continue our one-way love affair for the perenially underperforming Men’s team? Will the stadiums be a packed house or we will give an unfortunate message to the world that we were right in not starting the WIPL? It remains to be seen.

For the time being, let’s hope it will be a grand success like the IPL, and will ensure that we are heading in the right direction by eliminating gender disparity from sports. If it turns out to be on expected lines, WIPL will be a sight to behold.

cpl teams – Yeti Airlines – Dewald Brevis set for Warner-like introduction to international cricket

He has made a mark in T20s in leagues around the world but does not possess first-class experience yet

cpl teams

Hard-hitting opener batter Dewald Brevis can expect a David Warner-like transition to international cricket as South Africa look to deepen their player pool under a new coaching structure.

cpl schedule

Former under-19 coach Shukri Conrad, who was in charge of the age-group team at the 2022 World Cup, where Brevis was the top-scorer, and former Central Stags coach Rob Walter, were announced as South Africa’s new red and white-ball coaches respectively and both are keen to fast-track young talent with Brevis top of mind.

cpl news

He has become the most-talked-about batter in South Africa, more so when he struck 162 runs off 57 balls in a domestic T20 match in October, a week before the national men’s side failed to chase 159 in a must-win T20 World Cup match against Netherlands and calls for his immediate promotion grew.

cpl match

Enoch Nkwe, South Africa’s Director Cricket, has heard them and has a plan to get Brevis into the senior set-up soon.

cpl scores

“There’s a lot of noise around Brevis. We know how good he is. He has shown it in SA20,

he has played some good cricket and he has been pretty consistent in T20 cricket,” Nkwe said. “In terms of youngsters, the reality moving forward, we might have to do a David-Warner type of approach where there is going to be the transition phase from under-19 cricket into professional cricket through T20 and then ODI and then Test cricket. That’s something we foresee happening in the future.”

Warner, who played his 100th Test against South Africa at the MCG, had just 20 domestic white-ball caps to his name before making his international debut in a T20I against South Africa and played in only 11 first-class matches before his Test debut.

Brevis already has more experience than that in shorter formats. He has played in 37 T20s including at the IPL, CPL and SA20, and six List A matches but has yet to play a first-class match. As part of a strong Titans’ squad, who are third in the four-day domestic competition, and boasts names like Test captain Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, Theunis de Bruyn, and Heinrich Klaasen, it has been difficult for Brevis to get a look-in but playing him in longer formats is top of Nkwe’s mind.

“We understand someone like Brevis has a lot of cricket to play and now we have to see how we get him to that longer format? We know that he can offer a lot to South African cricket,” Nkwe said.

Asked specifically whether Conrad and Walter have been involved in discussions about Brevis, Nkwe would not be drawn into anything more than reiterating their commitment to development. “Both coaches are big believers in looking after the younger generation but also not just throwing them in the deep end,” he said. “It’s about having a very clear detailed plan of every individual who has been identified and how they are going to form part of the Proteas set-up.”

Ultimately, the decision of whether Brevis plays for South Africa will not lie with Conrad and Walter alone. Selection convener Victor Mpitsang and Patrick Moroney are the other two people involved in picking players and, though the coaching set-up has changed, both are contracted until the end of the year. They will be in charge of naming the group of players who will take on England in three World Cup Super League ODIs later this month. Given Brevis’ form – he struck an unbeaten 70 off 41 balls in the SA20 opener and 42 off 34 balls in the third game – he could be a wildcard pick for what are crucial matches for South Africa. They need to win at least one of the ODIs to remain in contention for automatic qualification for this year’s 50-over World Cup and with Nkwe saying the T20 and ODI formats are “close to each other,” it may be time for Brevis to graduate to the big time.

The squad is expected to be announced later this week but Walter will not be in charge of it just yet. The new coaches begin work next month and an interim appointment will be made for the England series.

cpl scores – Cricket: Warner motivated to win series in India

Australian batting stalwart David Warner has indicated he wants the 2024 T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies to be his international swansong, saying winning the title would be an icing on the cake.

cpl scores

“(This will) most likely be my last year of my international career. I’ve got my sights set on the 2024 (T20) World Cup as well, so finishing in the Americas (North America and Caribbean islands), that’d be nice to top it off with a win over there, pending selection,” Warner was quoted as saying by Sky Sports on Thursday.

cpl teams

Warner was adjudged the ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his tally of 289 runs in Australia’s winning campaign in the T20 World Cup in the UAE in 2021. He is currently playing BBL for Sydney Thunders.

cpl schedule

“I’ve signed (with the Thunder) for this year and next year, and it’s my time to contribute and give back. I’ve got that time to do that now … (this will) most likely be my last year of my international career,” added Warner.

cpl news

The T20 World Cup is being jointly hosted by the West Indies and the United States in June next year.

cpl match

In December last year, Warner had said that he was highly motivated for the four-Test Border-Gavaskar series in India if he is included in the touring party.

“The extra motivation for me is winning in India and completely winning a series in England. I’ve been told by the coach and the selectors they would like me to be there.

“Was there doubt? Of course there was doubt in my mind but for me it was about going out there and knowing that I’ve still got that hunger and determination because every time I rock up to training, I’ve got it,” he had said.

Meanwhile, Steve Smith has said he will keep concentrating on his ODI and Test careers and had not given much thought to his T20 international future. The former Test captain had played just one match during Australia’s home World Cup campaign last year.

“There’s not a great deal of T20 internationals, so for me, Test and one-day cricket are the huge priorities with what’s coming up and then we’ll wait and see,” Smith told reporters on Thursday.

Nepal court releases rape accused cricketer Lamichhane on bail

Nepal’s top court on Thursday released cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane on bail after he was accused of raping a minor in the Himalayan nation, officials said.

On September 8, a court in Nepal issued an arrest warrant for the national cricket team captain Lamichhane after a 17-year-old girl alleged that he raped her in a hotel room in Kathmandu, police had said.

The Patan High Court ordered release of Lamichhane with the bail of Rs 2 million, according to the court sources.

In October, Lamichhane was taken into custody.

A joint bench of judges Dhruvaraj Nanda and Ramesh Dhakal decided to release the former IPL star on bail of Rs 2 million, reversing the decision of the Kathmandu district court.

A minor, had registered a complaint against Lamichhane on September 5 at the police saying that she was raped by the cricket star and Lamichhane was subsequently sent to custody for investigation as per the district court verdict.

In October, Lamichhane wrote on Facebook that he would “fully cooperate in all stages of the investigation and will fight a legal battle to prove my innocence”, before being arrested.

However, Lamichhane has been barred to leave the country until the final verdict of the court in the case.

Lamichhane is Nepal’s most high-profile cricketer, and the first cricketer from Nepal to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), when he made his debut for the Delhi Capitals franchise in 2018.

A wily leg-spinner, armed with a vicious googly, he was a much sought-after cricketer in other big-ticket T20 leagues around the world, including the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the CPL.

The prodigiously gifted cricketer holds the record for the world’s second-fastest bowler to capture 50 ODI wickets and the third-fastest to race to 50 T20I wickets.

Lamichhane’s last international appearance came in August this year, when he played against Kenya in a T20I encounter.

Former England batsman Ballance makes winning debut for Zimbabwe

Former England batsman Gary Ballance contributed 30 runs on his international debut for Zimbabwe as they beat Ireland by five wickets on Thursday to win the opening Twenty20 international of their three-match series.

Ballance’s runs came off 29 balls as Zimbabwe scored 118-5 as they initially made heavy weather of chasing down Ireland’s modest total of 114 all out but in the end won with two overs to spare at the Harare Sports Club.

The 33-year-old left-handed batter last month signed a two-year contract to play domestic and international cricket in the country of his birth following his release from county cricket side Yorkshire.

Ballance played 23 Tests for England between 2014 and 2017, scoring 1,498 runs, including four centuries, at an average of 37.45. He also appeared in 16 one-day internationals but has been allowed to switch his international allegiance.

The Harare-born player has spent the last year on the sidelines while dealing with mental health issues after he admitted to using racist language against former Yorkshire team mate Azeem Rafiq.

Yorkshire, who released Ballance two years early from his contract as per the player’s wishes, have made sweeping changes following Rafiq’s explosive allegations of institutional racism at the club. Ballance has apologised to Rafiq in person.
